To the lady chosen by God and to her children, whom I love in the truth—and not I only, but also all who know the truth—because of the truth, which lives in us and will be with us forever:. CBE Member Lamar Wadsworth is Pastor of the Woolford Memorial Baptist Church, Baltimore, MD. A third argument for taking the chosen lady as a metaphor for a church is that Israel and the church are frequently portrayed with feminine metaphors. It was THIS subsequent rise of these false doctrines which is the FOCUS OF ALL THREE of John’s later epistles. Some conjecture that elect might be the name of a family, or of a particular church; but the common opinion is, that it was the proper name of a virtuous lady.. That includes faithfulness in marriage and family responsibilities. Since the letter is addressed to “a” (no article in the Greek text) chosen lady and her children, this poses no difficulty. Was she a mother, a house church leader, or a congregation? Philip’s four daughters, who were single women, were ministers of the Gospel in New Testament times. BDAG gives two definitions for kurios: (1) “one who is in charge by virtue of possession”, and (2) “one who is in a position of authority.”[2] Corresponding with these definitions, kurios is usually translated into English as “lord,” “master,” or “sir.”[3] The feminine kuria is usually translated as “lady” or “mistress” in texts outside of the New Testament. xi. The “Elect Lady” is loved “by all they that have known the Truth”(v.1). It only says, brothers/sisters of Jesus, which in a very stricter sense does not always, necessarily and exclusively mean born of Mary, but cousins too. 2 John 1:1 Context. It is also possible that she was single (although in the first century AD it is less likely that a single woman would have been the head of a household). I still think it unlikely that the chosen lady is Mary. Why would the term be used differently in 2 John? The epistle preserves correspondence between “the elder” and a “chosen lady and her children” (II John 1:1 NASB). In John’s theology, to know the truth is to know Jesus and to know Jesus is to know the truth. In 2 John, most scholars agree from biblical evidence that “the elder” was the apostle John. John called those whom he led his children. Inputs from Michael and discussions between him and Marg are also appreciated. Have we not all received and written personal letters that were addressed primarily to one member of the household but meant to be shared with the whole family? Galatians 4:26 teaches that God’s Church is the spiritual mother of Christians—her “children.” Notice II John 13: “The Amen. The word kyrios means “lord” and often refers to God; however the Greek word for “God”, strictly speaking, is theos. 1 From the Elder. (II John 2:1 NASB) Second John is the only New Testament book addressed to a woman (II John 1:1). 2 John Chapters « Prev; 1; Next » 1 From the Elder: my greetings to the Lady, the chosen one, and to her children, whom I love in truth-- and I am not the only one, for so do all who have come to know the Truth-- and I am not the only one, for so so do all who have come to know the Truth-. 4 I rejoiced greatly that I found of thy (sg) children walking in truth, as we have received a commandment from the Father. (John also wrote Revelation in which he refers (Revelation 12:1)to the true church as a woman. I will come back to read more later. Presuming that John the apostle is the author of 2 John, he would not have written a letter to a housemate if she was still alive. I truly love all of you and am confident that all who know the truth share in my love for you. The respectful tide kuria indicates, at the very least, the high regard accorded her by John and the Christian community This usage in 2 John may suggest that the title kuria was used the same way the term “Mother” is used in African-American churches today, as a tide of respect for a godly older woman whose good influence extends far beyond her immediate family. Does this suggest the "chosen lady" and her "chosen sister" are churches? In a non-technical context, it would be translated “shepherd.” (The translation “pastor” is simply the substitution of a Latin word for a Greek word.) As appealing as this idea may be, there is no evidence in this letter, or from early Christian writings, that “the chosen lady” was Martha. Just as there have been good and bad male leaders, there were good and bad female leaders. A metaphor does not work unless others understand the sense in which it is used. This is a deceiver and an antichrist. They are on my growing list of people to look up when I get to heaven! [7] Kuria is a Greek equivalent of “Martha,” “Martha” being the feminine form of an Aramaic word meaning “lord” or “master.”. When we read the letters that make up the greater part of our New Testament, we are reading someone else’s mail. John (“chosen lady”), addressed (in verse 1), who sent their greetings via John. [7] One such person is German theologian, Johann Benedict Carpzov II (1639–1699). I do not know which long-ago commentator was the first sheep over the cliff with that interpretation, but many others have followed! Is this not great? [To the chosen lady [] and her children:. 16:3-5, etc), possibly Chloe (1 Cor. 16:13.) We have other examples to show that early Christians often referred to Rome as “Babylon.” Thus, we can safely conclude mat “Babylon” means Rome in 1 Peter 5:13. He may well have been alive when Acts was written. Would you like to support my ministry of encouraging mutuality and equality between men and women in the church and in marriage? 2 We love you because of the truth that lives in us and will be with us forever. Greek scholar Henry Dana used to prescribe a good rule to his students: “When the plain sense of the text makes common sense, seek no other sense.”, 3. Lamar Wadsworth. Moreover by reading other ancient Greek papyri, I have come to the conclusion that Kuria was indeed a lady, as there are many papyrus letters addressed to other Kuriai. She is a possibility for the Chosen Lady, and benefit can be gained from reading the letter from her perspective. The chosen lady was well-known in the Christian community, and anyone who loved the Lord could not help but love her. This is in accord with II John 1, 13. © 2020 CBE International - All rights reserved. According to Eusebius, John was exiled during the reign of Domitian, so Revelation could have been written in the late 80sAD. 12 Having many things to write unto you (pl), I would not write with paper and ink: but I trust to come unto you (pl), and speak face to face, that our joy may be full. For example, kuria is used in direct address by Isaac to his mother Sarah in The Testament of Abraham (3.10 recension A) (circa 100 AD); it is used by Hermas to his former owner Rhoda in the Shepherd of Hermas 1:5) (circa 100 AD); and it is used by Perpetua’s brother and father to their sister and daughter, respectively, in the account of Perpetua’s martyrdom (para. 2 John is addressed to "the lady chosen by God" [1]The elder, To the lady chosen by God and to her children, whom I love in the truth—and not I only, but also all who know the truth— [2] because of the truth, which lives in us and will be with us forever: 1 The elder unto the elect lady and her children, whom I love in the truth; and not I only, but also all they that have known the truth; 2 For the truth's sake, which dwelleth in us, and shall be with us for ever. We have to keep this in mind. Amen." This becomes even clearer when we compare 2 John with John’s other two New Testament letters, especially 3 John, as there are several distinct similarities between 2 John and 3 John. 2 John 1:1-13 NASB1995 The elder to the chosen lady and her children, whom I love in truth; and not only I, but also all who know the truth, for the sake of the truth which abides in us and will be with us forever: Grace, mercy and peace will be with us, from God the Father and from Jesus Christ, the Son of … I see at least seven reasons supporting the position that the “chosen lady” should be understood as a designation for an actual woman who was a leader in the church, rather than as a metaphor for the church. 2 John New International Version (NIV). Did Priscilla Teach Apollos? Considering how the word is used, it is apparent that kuria was a term of respect, and used for a woman in a powerful or elevated social position. While English does not distinguish between you (singular) and you (plural)—except in my native deep South where we have the singular “you,” the plural “y’all,” and the emphatic plural “all of y’all”—if we examine personal letters we have written and received, we would find places where the writer was addressing only the individual recipient and also places where the writer was addressing the whole family. 2 John New Century Version (NCV). I really appreciate your analytical approach to the questionable religious traditions about women’s roles in the Body of Christ. One who insists that the lady is a metaphor must demonstrate that the metaphor would have been understood by the original readers. Especially during a time when widespread attacks on the deity of Jesus Christ was the topic of the day! There is no reason not to take the woman “who is in Babylon” to be an actual woman, a leader or prominent member of the church at Rome who was well-known to the recipients of 1 Peter. 5 And now I beseech thee (sg), Lady, not as though I wrote a new commandment unto thee (sg), but that which we had from the beginning, that we love one another. Paul does not mention her name; he simply refers to her as Rufus’ mother. 2 John 8-9: "Watch out that you do not lose what you have worked for, but that you may be rewarded fully. The chosen lady, like Lydia in Acts 16, probably worked hard in some cottage industry. Warning against religious deceivers (verses 7-11). a Christian community). Furthermore, if her church was comprised of virgins, as Clement claims, it is important to note that the congregation was not just of virgin women, as we will see below. 2 John 1:1. (I tend to think they are churches, perhaps house churches, rather than just a person.) Everybody’s responsibility ends up being nobody’s responsibility. (Similarly, some men are addressed as kurios as a term of respect and affection.) To whom else could this refer? This is clear from 2 John 2, which speaks of the truth which abides in us and will be with us forever, an obvious allusion to the promises of Jesus concerning the Holy Spirit as recorded in John 14. In the New Testament, there are several women mentioned who were hosts and leaders of house church leaders. There are two possibilities as to who this chosen lady is: OPTION #1: This figuratively refers to the entire church [1] Advocates of this view point out that the church is often metaphorically referred to as the “bride” of Christ (Eph. A parallel to the “chosen lady” designation occurs in 1 Peter 5:13, “She who is in Babylon, chosen together with you, sends you greetings, and so does my son Mark.” This is the strongest argument in favor of the metaphorical view, but it is not strong enough to prove the case. As such, our submission to Jesus as Lord is only as complete and sincere as our submission to God’s Word. In John 14:17, the Spirit is called the Spirit of Truth. Revelation consistently uses the “Babylon” metaphor for Rome. 2 because of the truth that remains in us and will be with us for ever. Perhaps this is a church. Stephen Smalley contends that the Elder’s declaration of love for the lady and her children, along with his assertion that this love is shared by all who know the truth, should be taken as indications that the chosen lady should be understood metaphorically.4 But why? [5] John Wesley (who did not have access to many of the ancient Greek documents that are now available, such as the ones mentioned above) also believed that Kyria was the woman’s name. While it is more likely that the word “elect” is simply used to describe the lady, Clement of Alexandra believed that eklektē was this woman’s name, a name we would translate into English as “Electa.” If so, eklektē kuria in 2 John 1:1 could be translated as “to Lady Electa.” However, the sister mentioned in the last verse of 2 John is also given the description as being “elect.” While it is not improbable that two women, somehow related, would have the same name—in Roman times, sisters could have the same name—it is more likely that the chosen lady and the chosen sister are individuals like Rufus, a man described as “chosen” or “elect” in Romans 16:13. John tells the chosen lady and her children to judge between true and false doctrine and to exclude those who try to bring in false teaching. She was probably a parent. Learn vocabulary, terms, and more with flashcards, games, and other study tools. The chosen lady may have been a widow. She believes that if we are in Christ we are part of the New Creation and part of a community where old social paradigms of hierarchies and caste systems have no place (2 Cor. I love all of you in the truth, [] and all those who know the truth love you. I’ve even emboldened the singular and underlined the plural pronouns and verbs to highlight the switches from singular to plural. Kuria is not an obscure word. The personal exhortations to love, most notably as a commandment from the beginning, would be amiss if indeed delivered to a single lady. We should not presume that any of us is beyond the need for encouragement or exhortation. 3 Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and from Jesus Christ, the Father’s Son, will be … He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son. Those century-old letters from the attic might also mention “your dear cousin,” “the pastor,” “our neighbors across the road,” or some other designation instead of a name. 2 We love you because of the truth that lives in us and will be with us forever. Why would John use the word “church” plainly in 3 John, but supposedly refer to the church metaphorically as a “lady” in 2 John? Friend, have you accepted the truth that Jesus came in the flesh, died on your behalf, and rose from the … Perhaps, she and her family had been part of John's spiritual family. Marg, thanks so much for the reply. While we do not have a flow chart showing the organizational structure of first century churches (which probably varied somewhat depending on the place and whether the church was predominately Jewish or Gentile), we should probably take “pastor/shepherd” as an umbrella term including both overseers and deacons. [8] Mary the mother of Jesus and John the Apostle may have spent their last years at Ephesus. 16:7), Euodia and Syntyche (Phil.
